Congaree National Park, South Carolina

May 4, 2010 - After a wonderful time in Hilton Head with Sonja & Michael, we headed further north central in South Carolina to Congaree National Park.  Home to ancient champion trees, Congaree is the largest old-growth floodplain forest in this continent.  We camped and hiked the floodplains through the green, humid-perfumed & wet air covered with Water Tupelo, American Elm, Cherrybark Oak, Loblolly Pine & moss covered Bald Cypress trees.  This forest was a vivid, jungle green sight to see which we didn't realize existed in Northern America.  A small haven of 24,000 acres and saved from logging in the 70's, we felt lucky to visit this precious ecosystem at a national park hardly known in the US.

This is also where I tested out my new Panasonic Lumix with a 12x optical zoom, HD video & wide angle shots.  My previous camera broke in Savannah, GA and I couldn't wait to get a new one.
A dew-misted view of our hike.
Crazy little guy drinking water from the leaves.
Gorgeous Weston Lake off our boardwalk trail.
Bald Cypress quenching from the lake.
More awesome Bald Cypress roots.
Our camp in the mosquito infested, damp forest.
