Oregon Coast

Aug. 31 - Sept. 1, 2010 - From the Washington coast border, we roll into the Oregon coast.  We drove 151 miles to our overnight stop in Newport, OR.  The drive was quite mysterious and kind of blah as we drove out in the pouring rain and heavy fog from the marine layer.  Not once were we able to visibly see the coast nor the coastline.  The coastal conifers were super eerie with fog and rain creeping through.  The highlight of the day was breaking from lunch, totally drenched in our rain gear at the Tillamook Cheese Factory!  The town of Tillamook is a coastal Oregon town and we delighted in our obsession for cheese with simple cafe dishes they offered at their visitor center.  We stayed at a motel and dried up all our gear.

On our second day of driving from Newport, we were spared from the rain, but drove through marine layer for most of the day until it finally cleared up, 28 miles before our overnight stop.  We took advantage of the visibility and finally got to see the Oregon coast with a rest stop in Port Orford and took in the spectacular views.  We stayed at a tiny motel in Gold Beach after 176 miles from Newport driving on the 101.  Driving out of Gold Beach, we enjoyed more clear coastal and coniferous views before heading to the California border.

Tillamook grilled cheddar & swiss cheese and tots at Tillamook's cafe.  I haven't had tater tots since high school and they were spectacular!
Holy amazingness, a cheese factory on the coastline!
Tillamook's cheese beltline, with their lights glowing in 'golden cheddar' colors.

 A fog-free day.
